What is Diwali?
Diwali, or the “Festival of Lights,” is a holiday celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains, symbolizing the spiritual victory of light over darkness. The five-day festival involves lighting oil lamps (diyas), decorating with colorful lights and rangoli (floor designs), exchanging gifts, and feasting with family and friends. It typically falls between late October and mid-November.
What to Eat During Diwali

During Diwali, a feast of sweet treats and savory snacks take center stage to celebrate abundance. There’s mithai like laddoos, gulab jamun, rasgulla, and barfi that are made from ghee, cardamom, nuts, and milk solids. There’s also chakli, namak para, mathri, and samosas that are perfect for sharing and feeding a large group of people. Around the dining table, families typically dig into festive meals like pulao, paneer butter masala, dal makhani, and pooris. People also people come together around dishes like murukku, adhirasam, farsan, and khaman.
Regional Diwali Bites
During Diwali, families across India prepare regional delicacies that reflect their unique cultural traditions. In Maharashtra, people enjoy Anarsa and Karanji, while in South India, murukku and adhirasam are festive favorites. North Indian homes often feature gujiya, mathri, and a variety of rich sweets like soan papdi and besan laddoo.

This event is being held on October 11 from 11am to 6pm at Memorial Park. Stop by for a huge celebration featuring music, dancing, art booths, henna, and more. There will also be performances, food vendors, and water balls. Admission is free. Free parking is available across the street at De Anza College.

On October 19 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds, the Association of Indo Americans is hosting a blend of Dussehra and Diwali with lively cultural performances, food stalls, and fun-filled celebrations for all ages. The event starts at 12pm and tickets are $17.
“Bhangra & Beats” Night Market [San Francisco]
SF is hosting its first official Diwali celebration on October 24 from 5 to 10pm. The event takes place on Sacramento & Front Streets downtown. The event features live performances, street food, vendors, cocktails, and activities for the whole family. Admission is free with RSVP.
