Even if you’re not a morning person, we think these breakfast sandwiches are good enough to get you out of bed hungry. Our favorite breakfast sandwiches are rich, unique, and all include some form of egg. We can’t think of a better way to start the day. Check out our top spots across the Bay.
San Francisco
Devil’s Teeth
Devil’s Teeth serves some of the most decadent sandwiches around. Their secret is a freshly baked buttermilk biscuit with a crisp exterior. We love the special breakfast sandwich that comes with eggs, bacon, pepper jack cheese, avocado, and lemon-garlic aioli for a complete meal that’ll keep you full until lunch.
Kahnfections
Kahnfections also specializes in a housemade biscuit, but they take it a step further with their bacon-cheddar-scallion biscuit. The creation pairs perfectly on their sandwich stuffed with egg, avocado, ham, and cheese.
Breadbelly
Breadbelly makes a breakfast sandwich with Asian-American influence. The sandwich starts on a pillowy housemade bun stacked with a fried egg, smoked ham, and gruyere. The twist comes in the form of fermented chile paste which adds umami as well as heat. It also features kale coated in sweet and sour sauce to counter the bitterness. There’s truly no other sandwich like it.
Toast’N Egg
Toast’N Egg offers the most variety of sandwiches out of every spot on this list. Does sticking an egg into a sandwich automatically make it a breakfast sandwich? That’s for you to decide. We think their best offering is the Curry Up Crunch Chicken toast filled with a slab of fried chicken,, egg, cheese, cabbage, curry sauce, and sweet cream. For a more traditional breakfast take, we recommend the double egg toast filled with cabbage, kiwi sauce, chip crumbs, and seaweed.
Mama’s Luncheonette
Mama’s Luncheonette dishes out Halal breakfast sandwiches and burritos. We think their best dish is their mesquite smoked brisket sandwich topped with egg, green goddess dressing, and arugula on a sesame brioche bun.
Cafe Réveille
Cafe Réveille dishes out arguably one of the best breakfast sandwiches in the city. Eggs, cheddar, and bacon are stacked onto a poppy seed kaiser along with avocado, arugula, and hot sauce. It’s a combination that’s bright, fresh, and rich.
East Bay
Egg Pals
Egg Pals is a pop-up specializing in breakfast sandwiches. Their menu changes frequently, but they offer three staple sandwiches. The first is the egg pal, a traditional breakfast sandwich with eggs, bacon, American cheese, pickled red onions, and herby mayo. The second is a vegg pal with eggs, dressed arugula, American cheese, and pickled onions. Our favorite is the pickle pal, a bright, acidic combination of mixed pickles served with eggs, cheese, and herby mayo.
South Bay
Hash N Dash
Hash n Dash is a South Bay pop-up that makes it more socially acceptable to order a smashed patty for breakfast. It’s essentially a Mcgriddle made with a smashed sausage patty and loaded with burger sauce, cheese, onions, and a touch of syrup. Keep an eye out for their special made with spam.
Dulcinea Panaderia
Dulcinea Panaderia is a Mexican bakery that also offers sandwiches, tamales, and drinks. Their breakfast sandwich is built on a flaky croissant. The fillings are similar to what you’d find in a torta — lettuce, mayo, jalapeño, onions, and tomato. We recommend swapping the Swiss cheese for Oaxacan cheese and asking for al pastor. It’s a fun Mexican twist on the traditional breakfast sandwich.
House of Bagels
House of Bagels has many Bay Area locations, and while the quality varies from spot to spot, we think their breakfast sandwiches are worth seeking out. You can get the typical bacon or sausage patties stacked with egg and cheese in a sandwich here. If you’re looking for something a bit different, get a sandwich filled with hummus, sun-dried tomato basil, PB&J, or pizza toppings. (Check the menu at your local House of Bagels before visiting)
Napa
Model Bakery
Model Bakery is outside the range most people from San Francisco would travel for breakfast, but we think it’s worth traveling for. There are a few Model Bakery locations, so be sure to check the one you visit makes breakfast sandwiches. They have three bread options: grilled English muffin, croissant, and buttermilk biscuit.
